Cowgirl Up!

Annie Oakley is probably the most famous cowgirl of all. Born Phoebe Anne Oakley Moses she was forced into an orphanage  at an early age due to her widowed mother not able to support her. She became a sure-shot during her teenage years to help her impoverished family survive by hunting game.  In 1876, Annie beat another shooter, Frank Butler. They were married and became a variety show act and were featured in the Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show in 1885.  


Another famous Cowgirl was Calamity Jane, Martha Cannary. A well known wild west woman who looked like a man, shot like a cowboy, and could tell a tall tales. In 1870, she joined General Custer's group as a scout at Fort Russell Wyoming. She wore a uniform like the men and so began Calamity Jane's habit of dressing like a man.  Calamity would say about herself that she was the most reckless and daring rider and one of the best shots in the West. He skills took her into Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in 1895 where she performed sharp shooting astride her horse. 

Cowgirls are still going strong today. 1,000s of girls and ladies compete nationally in Rodeo's in the women's events of: Bareback, Bull Riding, Calf Breakaway, Calf Tie Down, and Team Roping. There are no women allowed, however, in the PBR, the Professional Bull Riders circuit.

WASPs

During World War II, Women were used in different fields to take over men's jobs due to a shortage of men at war. Almost exclusively, these women were relieved of duty from their positions when the men returned. 

From 1942-1944, the Women Air Force Service Pilots, WASP, was established and the first women in  history were trained to fly  American military aircraft.


1078 Women were trained throughout the country to be Pilots during WWII and 38 of them died in the line of duty. 

The program was disbanded in December of 1944 when it was decided that their assistance was not longer needed. WASPs were not given veteran status or benefits until 1977. 


It was not until 1976 that the Air Force started accepting women again as pilots but they could only fly Noncombat missions. It was not until 1993 that were women were allowed to fly combat aircraft.

Ain't I a Woman!

Sojourner Truth was a slave who escaped to freedom in 1826. She then fought for the abolition of slavery and Women's Rights during her lifetime. 


During the Civil War, She gathered supplies for black volunteer regiments. In 1864 she went to Washington, D.C., where she helped integrate streetcars and met with President Abraham Lincoln. The same year, she was appointed to the National Freedmen's Relief Association to counsel former slaves in the area of resettlement.


In 1851 at the Women's Convention in Ohio, she delivered what would become one of the famous speeches in US History. Here is what she had to say:

If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back , and get it right side up again! And now they is asking to do it, the men better let them.

Being "for something" does not have to mean you are "against" something else.


It is possible to want Empowerment of Women and the advancement of them without making it at the expense of men. The advancement of one class of people should not mean the oppression of another. How many wars would never have been fought if the oppressed had not then turned into the oppressors.


Abundance is not limited. Everyone benefits from equality. Individuals are then treated as such, rather than as a class.

Women will Advance in this country and in this world when they work together rather than against each other. If we could ever harness our collective power, some amazing things would happen. 

EMPOWERMENT NOT BELITTLEMENT IS THE KEY TO ANY  ADVANCEMENT 

The Science of Women

In 1892 in Boston, Ellen Swallow Richards gave a lecture calling for the "christening of a new science." This new science included the study of "consumer nutrition" which later became Home Economics and environmental education which later became Ecology.

Many U.S. women made significant discoveries in early Astronomy. Annie Jump Cannon's work in 1901 led to a reclassification of stars and Henrietta Swan Leavitt's study of variable stars in 1908 led to Leavitt's Law; which changed the way we forever looked at the universe. 

== Physics == 
American Physicists, Leona Woods Marshall and Katharine Way worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II.  

== Nobel Prize ==
Gerti Cori was a biochemist and the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in science.

Please and Thank You

From my experience, women do get more done with these two little phrases.


Whether it is right or wrong - I have found a man can say something very directly and to the point; whereas a woman is expected to add pleasantries such as please and thank you to her requests.


Hurt pride and personalities get bruised and cause barriers to communication preventing good working relationships. Life would be alot easier if personalities didn't get in the way in life, but we are not Vulcans.


So I had to decide - which was more important - to be 'right' or to be effective.

For me, having the most efficient and effective communication is one of the most important aspects of any good relationship, at home or at work. I have found for me to be the most effective, It is worth it for me to soften my edges.

The matriarchal influence in the hispanic culture has been predominant for some time.

In English Common Law, when a woman married she lost her right to own property in her own name. Spanish Law however, still afforded a wife rights independent of her husband. She retained property rights of land she held prior to the marriage and held 1/2 interest on community property held during marriage.

Women who no longer had a father or a husband had full rights of property and control over them. This was usually widows but sometimes single daughters whose father left land to them or even a few divorced women. 

In most Latin Cultures, women also keep their surnames. They have traditionally added their husbands name to theirs in a hyphenated new name. There is a new trend of women in today's cultures of not even adding their husband's surname at all.

More than 60 women obtained Spanish or Mexican Land Grants in Texas before 1848.
