She was a King

MLK's widow, Coretta Scott King accomplished an amazing amount in her years and is considered one of the most significant advocates of civil rights.

Coretta Scott was a classically trained opera singer who married Martin Luther King Jr. in 1953. MLK was assassinated in 1968 and she took up his cause and had great success.

She has met with almost every president in her time to discuss civil rights. She worked in the USA and abroad to help end racism, including apartheid in South Africa, and also took up the fight for Gay Rights.

In 1968, She founded The King Center which is a memorial dedicated to the advancement of the legacy and philosophy of Martin Luther King Jr.

She campaigned to make her husband's birthday a National Holiday and in 1983 she was present when President Reagan signed the bill that enacted it.

The world lost a great Leader in 2006 when Coretta Scott King passed away.

She held a graceful and unwavering determination in the fight to banish injustices.

Education - A Precious Commodity

Women are still fighting in parts of the world to have access to education.

The first college to allow coeducation in the US was Oberlin College in 1837. In 1841, we saw the first women (3) to obtain a Bachelor's Degree in this country. Then Oberlin was responsible for another historical landmark; when in 1862, Mary Jane Patterson, the first African American woman obtained a college degree.

In the 1950s, when it became prevalent for women to start attending college; most women were there to earn an Ms. Degree. College was merely a way to pass the time until the real job of being someone's wife came about. Eventhough we have advanced from our archaic way of thinking that education is only a leisure for women, many women still do not appreciate the value of it.

Education is one of the quickest and surest ways of advancement for women in any field:

A woman with a two-year associate's degree earns 28% more than one with a high school education

A woman with a bachelor's degree earns 75% more than one with a high school education.

If you have educated yourself be proud. If you've never sought advanced courses after high school, consider making that investment in yourself.

In 1614 Pocahontas married a Jamestown colonist, the first recorded interracial marriage in American history.
In 1655 Elizabeth Key, who was a slave in Virginia, won her freedom in a lawsuit based on her father's status as a free Englishman

In 1852 Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin.
In 1871 the first state laws specifically making wife beating illegal were passed.
In 1872 Susan B. Anthony was arrested for trying to cast her vote.
In 1900 Women, including a few US, competed for the 1st time in the Olympics
In 1912 Daisy Low founded Girl Scouts
In 1917 Jeannette Rankin, a Republican from Montana, became the first woman elected to the House of Representatives.
In 1920 Women earn the right to vote - 19th Amendment
In 1932 Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly the Atlantic
In 1932 Hattie Caraway of Arkansas became the first woman elected to the Senate.
In 1933 Frances Perkins was appointed as the Secretary of Labor, making her the first woman to hold a job in a Presidential cabinet, FDR's
In 1942 78 Military nurses were held as POWs for over three years.
In 1943 The Women's Airforce Service Pilots ( WASP) was created to free male pilots for combat service.
In 1955 Rosa Parks is arrested for not giving up her bus seat (She did the same thing in 1943)
In 1964 the Civil Rights Act was passed
In 1967 Affirmative Action measures were ordered by President Johnson
In 1978 the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed.
In 1981 Sandra Day O'Connor became the first female Supreme Court Justice
In 1984 Geraldine Ferraro became the first woman nominated for Vice President by a major party.
In 1996 the US Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional for Military Institutes to deny entry to females.
In 2008 Ann Dunwoody became the first female four-star general in the United States military.
