Countries that are ruled by Dictators, such as Brunei and United Arab Emirates, have limited voting rights for both men and women. Only 2 Countries that use an electoral system in government, currently do not allow women to vote:

❖Saudi Arabia ~ When this article was originally written, Women in Saudi Arabia could not vote. In 2011, King Abdullah granted Saudi Women the right to vote starting with the 2015 elections.
❖Vatican City ~ The smallest country in the World with almost 800 inhabitants. The Pope is elected by the College of Cardinals. Women cannot be cardinals, therefore cannot vote.

Interesting Note: Liechtenstein was the last country in Europe to grant women's voting rights in 1984.

Women's Equality was just a joke

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964  prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.
The word "sex" was not in the original wording of the Act. During the debate of the Civil Rights Act on the House floor, Congressman Howard Smith of Virginia mockingly offered the one word amendment to the Act. This led to several hours of debate, later called "ladies day in the House", after which the amendment did pass.

Smith was a staunch conservative and opponent of the Act and made the amendment as a ploy to have the entire bill shot down.

Smith later confessed to his colleague, Congresswoman Martha Griffiths, "Martha, I’ll tell you the truth. I offered it as a joke."

"The world has never yet seen a truly great and virtuous nation, because in the degradation of women, the very fountains of life are poisoned at their source." ~ Lucretia Motts

One of the biggest moments in the Woman's Movement was made by an opponent only as a joke - That idea backfired!

Get out the Vote!

In 1848 in Seneca Falls New York, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott organized the first Women's Rights Convention to discuss women's equality ~ including the right to vote.

Wyoming Territory was the first territory to grant women the right to vote in 1869. In the late 1890's, Idaho and Utah followed suit.

On August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States was finally ratified. This finally gave ALL American women the same rights and responsibilities of citizenship as men!

Women fought hard for you and I to have this right.

Get yourself to the polls this year and exercise that right!
