Empowering vs. Enabling

It is an important distinction - one that I feel many women do not make.

Doing something for someone else is often quicker and easier in the short run than teaching them how to do something for themselves. 


I think women in general are "pleasers." They don't want to cause waves or ruffle feathers. So in order to avoid conflict, they do too much for others when they should be doing it for themselves. 

You may give them guidance when needed and help them at times but the measure of a STRONG woman is not how much she takes on but rather how much strength she passes on to others by teaching them and giving them the support they need to be the best they can be.

So whether it is teaching, coaching, supervising, or parenting - it is always better to empower someone to learn how to be good at something rather than doing if for them and enabling them to stay ignorant, weak, or lazy. 

Women's Equality was just a joke

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964  prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.
The word "sex" was not in the original wording of the Act. During the debate of the Civil Rights Act on the House floor, Congressman Howard Smith of Virginia mockingly offered the one word amendment to the Act. This led to several hours of debate, later called "ladies day in the House", after which the amendment did pass.

Smith was a staunch conservative and opponent of the Act and made the amendment as a ploy to have the entire bill shot down. 

Smith later confessed to his colleague, Congresswoman Martha Griffiths, "Martha, I’ll tell you the truth. I offered it as a joke."

One of the biggest moments in the Woman's Movement was made by an opponent only as a joke - That idea backfired!

Girl Scouts Forever

This year marks the 100 year Anniversary of Girls Scouts of America

In 1912, Juliette 'Daisy' Low got together a group of young girls for hiking and The Girl Scouts of America was born. An Organization who ~ builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.


The Girl Scouts are committed to honoring all paths for girls and empowering them into confident Women.

I was a girl scout from 1-8th grade. It was a great experience for me and definitely shaped my ideas of what women could do. It was alot of FUN as well!

If you have a daughter or other young female relative, I would encourage them to get involved in this organization. You will see a more confident, self sufficient young lady emerge from such a rich experience.

Let's pull it together Ladies!

So many times in my life

I have found myself contemplating the lack of power and influence women, as a group, have possessed throughout history. I feel that there is something to be done about this and it is the sole responsibility of women to do something about it. We are often our own worst enemies when in fact if we allied ourselves we would benefit as individuals and as a whole. 

I feel that there should be more "pulling up" of women by other women rather than "putting down" - I don't know if anyone will read this blog but I wanted some place to speak my mind and encourage others to do so. 

This is not however a place to bash - bash men or other women for that matter. Let's stick to empowerment through positivity and by example. Let's encourage each other to be the best we can be! 

Mentor another woman you know - show a woman graciousness in the eye of pettiness - be the woman that you want others to be.
