Subtle Sexism

Subtle Sexism exists all around us.

It is often these seemingly minor slights that can have the biggest impact. When a man and woman are on a committee together, coteaching a class, or presenting a project to the boss.

If a man never reiterates what the woman says - He does not reference her in his comments - He turns his body away from her rather than bladed somewhat toward her during his conversation - He corrects her or interrupts her - Rolls his eyes or makes faces while she is talking

These are all indicators of disdain, disrespect, and disregard

Others present WILL pick up on these subtleties & they will transfer to them. They too will unconsciously disregard the female or her ideas or not respect her as highly as the male.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you are a male and wish to not subtlety undermine your female counterpart in a meeting, training class, etc. then do the following:
  • Refer to her by name
  • Gesture toward her when speaking positively about something
  • Include her in the discussion or conversation
  • Openly credit her for her work or contribution
  • If you have something to change in what she is saying or instructing then talk to her about it and give her the opportunity to amend the comment or further clarify it rather than you speaking for her or even worse, against her.
Undermining a female coworker in a public setting can be a devastating set back that the two individuals may never be able to recover from.
Rescue Me Syndrome
Animals need to be rescued - PEOPLE do not!
Often insecure women end up in dysfunctional relationships because they form relationships with people who themselves are:
  • In a "bad marriage"
  • Insecure - who have been abused themselves as a child
  • Who are looking for someone to take care of them
  • Abusers
  • Narcissistic Manipulators
Relationships are mutually enhancing situations that benefit the two individuals on the overall. They should not be one side, dominated by one individual, or serving the good of one at the expense of the other.
Learning how to have HEALTHY Relationships is one of the greatest accomplishments in life and one that can serve to benefit you and others the most.
RESPECT!
So often these days, I see young women that have no respect for themselves. They degrade themselves in public, claiming shock value or independence. It seems the mentality of many women, that if they degrade or victimize themselves before anyone else can - that somehow gives them power.
In actuality, it just gives away pieces of yourself and grants others the permission to treat you with less respect than you deserve. This leads to poor and unhealthy relationships, self worth issues and re-victimization.
If you don't respect yourself, how do you expect anyone else to.
Self worth is something that is not gained from other people or outside sources, rather it is cultivated from within. True self empowerment never comes from self deprecation.
Believe in your own Self Worth!
Rage Against the Machine
We are a fast food society in a diet pill world, waiting for the big payout.
People pass each other on the street with no regard for the person that they see, no greetings, or even acknowledgement of each other as a fellow human being.
We have become self consumed, self absorbed, and self indulgent
We are distracted and consumed by modern technology and conveniences and it has made this a faceless world where there is little respect and accountability to the way that we treat each other.
slow down, look around
pay attention -
you are missing so much.
Human relationship is the only way to healing. How we relate to, speak to, and treat each other makes the difference between a cruel and hardened world and an engaged and compassionate one.
Only when we go back to treating each other like humans, will we ever be able to overcome the many societal challenges that plague this modern day culture ~ racism, classism, sexism.
It is your WORLD - make it a wonderful one!
